So I know I said I was going to do this a long time ago but here it is. Better late than never...right?!
"JOY" Tutorial
(Other Word Ideas: NOEL, HoHoHo, PEACE)
Step 1: 2 x 10 wood (which were cut 11" long pieces), cut # a pieces accordingly to letters in word of choice.

Step 2: Choose letters
Step 3: Paint letters (We choose red but feel free to change if desired)
Step 4: Paint Blocks, I used acrylic black paint, but again, feel free to try different colors. Also, I forgot to take a picture before so this is actually after I sanded/distressed.

Step 5: Sand for a more distressed look.
Step 6: Choose paper
Step 7: Tear edges of paper

Step 8: Use ink/pastels/chalk to color edges for more distressed look.
Step 9: Mod Podge block (I used the matte finish Mod Podge)
Step 10: Align paper on block and apply another thin layer Mod Podge over the paper.
Step 11: Apply letter to block while Mod Podge is still fresh.
Repeat steps until you have finished all letters.
TA*DA!!!!!
